This past Saturday, the Board of Trustees, approved the 2023 Budget Ballot. This ballot will be mailed out next Monday to all owners. In addition, we have attached the 2023 Budget FAQs to this email. If you do not receive your ballot in a timely manner, please call the Hat Island office and we will email you one, as well as make sure we have the correct mailing address for you.
The Finance Committee, in conjunction with staff and committee input, worked diligently to bring forth a reasonable budget that does include a slight increase in assessments and fees. These increases will keep us on a healthy financial path forward as our little piece of paradise continues to grow. Thank you for taking the time to look at all of the information provided to the community over the past few months. This information is posted on the Hat Island Website under timely information on the Documents page.

The Barge dates are set for 2023. January 2, 3 and 4 will be islanders first opportunity to have their treasurers barged to the island and their dilapidated vehicles hauled off. Do you need a septic pump out? Get those forms into firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as you can so we can start planning the runs!
The next date to bring things over won’t be until May!
What do I do in the meantime? I really need to get Grandma’s chair to the island before that? No worries, we have you covered. Just send in a cargo request form to email@example.com. We have a cargo run scheduled for you on Thursday, December 8th. Plenty of time to get Grandma’s chair here!

- If you are leaving for more than a week, please leave your vehicle parked at your property and utilize the Rabbit Transit to get to and from the marina and your ride off island, be it on the Hat Island Ferry or your private vessel. The office is open M-F from 8am to 4pm, in addition with enough notice we can transport you to the marina. The marina parking is full and we have projects that will require moving cars for short periods of time. It is helpful if you leave a hidden key, notifying the office where it is, for necessary movements such as this. All notes of key location will be kept in a locked safe deposit box for security purposes.
- If you are leaving for the winter the above parking recommendation goes, but in addition don’t forget to winterize your home. You should be turning off your water at the water meter every time you leave but the added item would be to drain your pipes for the winter. No one wants to come back to their island retreat and find that they had a water leak.

Reminder to New Owners …and old ones too
Outdoor burning, as it applies to Hat Island, is categorized into 3 types: Recreational fires, Residential yard-debris burning and land clearing fires.
Recreational Fire means cooking fires or campfires using charcoal or firewood that occur in designated areas or on private property. A permit is not required for “recreational fires” with a total fuel area no greater than 2 feet in diameter and/or 2 feet in height. These fires must be within an approved fire pit with a rock/brick/metal border. At NO time are any beach fires permitted on Hat Island. They will be put out when discovered/reported and will be treated as an illegal burn.
Residential yard-debris burning fires are limited to vegetative material grown on the property, such as leaves, branches and twigs. A permit from the fire department is required and subject to size restrictions noted on the permit. Proof of adequate fire control measures such as a charged water line (hose with water on) and full-time attendance of the fire by a responsible adult must be maintained.
All recreational or Yard Debris fires must be out (cold to the touch) by sunset.
Land clearing or stump burning fires are under strict control and must be permitted by the local fire department. A permit and inspection of the proposed burn area will be conducted as part of the process. Proof of adequate water supply and heavy equipment sufficient to maintain control of the fire must be present at all times with operating personnel. These fires must not be fueled after sundown or if winds become an issue for embers and firebrands. Control must be maintained at all times.
All fires that do not meet regulations can be subject to heavy fines and financial responsibility should property damage or fire-fighting efforts be required as a result of willful or negligent actions of the permittee.

If you have a concern about something on the ferry, please contact ferry staff. They can address it with the offending party. If you feel your concern isn’t being handled by the crew in a timely, and effective manner, please ask to speak to the captain. Please do not confront fellow passengers.
Talk to Each Other
How do you be a good neighbor? Communicate with each other, lend a hand! There are a lot of new owners on the island and they cannot expect to know all of the little idiosyncrasies and island rules that make our little island such a special place to be. If you see someone that seems confused or is doing something that would be frowned upon, reach out and lend them a hand and offer advice. Neighbors helping neighbors is how this island works and those of us that have been here for a long period of time need to reach out and lend that helping hand.
